The first time I heard Pharrell’s “Happy” was at the movie theater with my family as we watched “Despicable Me 2”. Yep, I loved it then, and I looked forward to downloading it to my iPhone. I figured that every person who had seen the movie would feel the same way. Little did I know that that would literally be EVERYone I know…and more.
This song Has become a PHENOMENON.
People (including myself) put the snazzy tune on a repeat loop on their devices. They post and repost the video on their Facebook pages. They jump up instantly and dance whenever they hear the first measure of the intro. I danced like a fool in my living room when Pharrell sang it on the Oscars. Folks even take the time to make their own videos to the song. “Happy” has everyone smiling!
So why is that? Why has this song struck a similar chord is so many people? I think I have a few reasons:
It talks about a familiar and pleasant emotion: being happy. Everyone can relate to being happy. People like it when they feel happy. Folks want to do kind things for others when they are happy. This song can lift your spirits and make people around you want to take their minds off of their cares for a moment or two.
This song is clean and fun. Who doesn’t love a song that you can sing along with and not have to worry about a foul word somewhere in the song? This is a tune you can sing with CHILDREN, and you can jump/dance around with them too! Almost any dance move can work to it.
The music is infectious and amazing. Yeah, Pharrell is a master of the easy breezy carefree feeling song, and this is one of his best. The beat and groove are a retro 60s feel…I have to do the swim and the pony and such at some point while I’m bopping around. The harmonies are tight and the chords just lift you. And it is not overcomplicated…everyone can pick it up. And did I mention that Pharrell’s falsetto voice is just a refreshing sound? Yes indeed.
Those are just a few I think of. What about you..have you heard the song? If so, why do you think “Happy” is such a wildly popular song? I’d love to hear your reasons in the comments below 😉
Happily dancing around,
p.s. check out the video my friend’s church made to this very song!
