I am by no means an expert in the field of blogging.
But I am, however, a bit of a thinker, and this is a question that crossed my mind that I would like to explore for just a moment.
What is your blogging endgame?
I started my blog in 2010 as a way to pull my homeschooling children into writing and expressing themselves more. Mine was the “parent” blog on the platform, and I set their 3 blogs up under mine. Little did I know that their educational experiment would lauch me into the world of blogging, the blogosphere, for myself!
So here I am, just shy of 5 years into the game, and things have really started to take off for me in the past 8 months. I am getting some traction with my posts, making some connections, and seeing myself as a voice with some things to say.
Why then would I be proposing a question about my own finish line where blogging in concerned?
I first encountered this concept at a Disney on the Road conference in 2013 in Maryland. One of our speakers, Jen Labbit, talked about her journey to build her own business. That part I expected to hear. What I didn’t expect is that she shared a bit of her own endgame as far as that was concerned. She addressed life after her cloth diaper covers and what kind of legacy she wanted to leave as far as impact, giving back, and examples for her children.
A wise woman (my mother in love) once said, “have the goal in mind and work backwards from that.” Some of you have already worked from the end backward. I myself have not, at least not initially. My journey has been one of exploring this world of blogging, learning so much about the impact I can have, how to become better at what I do in it, and the opportunities that are available to me. It is only now that I am crystallizing my thought as to the goal for me in blogging and how I need to position myself to get there.
What do you think? May be you have pondered this endgame question, maybe it has not even occurred to you to have one. We have a timeframe on our work to retirement – should there be a time frame on blogging? A few months ago I read a post from Amy Lupold Bair, a blogger/social media influencer that is known by many. From what I could tell, after about 10 years of blogging, she was reevaluating her moving forward as a blogger (http://resourcefulmommy.com/14650/i-got-sick-of-myself/ ) It was an insightful read, and she furthered fueled my desire to hone my focus and stay balanced. (Thanks, Amy!) I don’t think she is done writing, but I think she is more aware of what she wants to accomplish when she does.
Right now, I’m so excited to see things taking off for my blog that I can’t imagine not doing it. However, there may come a day when my blogging season ends. I’m not talking soon, just in the grand scheme of things. What is beyond blogging? should we be looking to mentor others who are getting their feet wet in the blogosphere? Do I write a book from all that I have shared on the blog?
I have no definitive answer, but I did want to take the time to pose the question. What do you think? I would love to hear your feelings/thoughts on the subject. Maybe we can inspire each other to hone and sharpen our vision for the future 😉
I look forward to hearing from you!
