Refreshingly funny: Things NOT to do at Disney

Or maybe this should be titled, “What a seasoned Disney guest should no better than to do.” Get ready to chuckle 😉

So my last visit to Walt Disney World was the middle of last month, as I was an attendee at the Niche Parent 14 conference. The Thursday of the event, before it officially started, I headed out to meet with Sparkly Nicole for lunch at the Contemporary. I was so excited to finally meet her and to get near a Park, and I hopped on one of the Disney coaches and was on my way. It felt so good to sit in my seat on that air-conditioned bus (I had been up and moving a lot that morning). It was mid-morning, and time for a bit of a snack. Without even thinking, I whipped out the last 1/2 of my orange juice from breakfast and grabbed a couple of almonds to chomp on. Right about the time I leaned my head back to take a swig, the recording on the bus ever so kindly reminded us that there was no eating or drinking on the bus. Whaaat? How did I forget this? It all happened so fast that I didn’t even have time to be properly embarrassed, even though there was a family of five sitting directly across from me who witness my whole faux pas! Well, all I could do was shrug my shoulders as my eyes got real wide, smile, and hurriedly put my OJ back in my backpack. We all just laughed about it, and I blamed it on my excitement for being at Disney, and that whole family chuckled with me and wholeheartedly agreed.

1st DONT: no eating on the Disney coaches.

Now if that weren’t enough, it gets better. Fast forward to the end of my bus ride to the Magic Kingdom. {Now keep in mind that we usually drive down to FL, so we always have the van to drive around to the different resorts and parks.}. So as we pull into the bus drop off, I see the Contemporary behind me. I think to myself, “oh, I can just get off here and walk over that way.” Yeah…NO. As I get off the bus and start walking (the opposite way from the arrows that point to MK) why did it cause the bus driver to call out “ma’am” (twice) and almost chase me down to inform me that I absolutely could not go that way? Again, I didn’t have too much time to be embarrassed so I just enlisted his help in finding out the quickest way to get “over there” and off to the Monorail I walked, at the quick step. Of course, I was very grateful that he stopped me for being in position to be hit by a bus, but my ego was a bit bruised for having made such a mistake in bus protocol…oi!

2nd DONT: no making up your own route to resorts on foot.

This last one is a matter of personal preference, and I learned mine really fast. So the Friday of the conference, I attended a few sessions, had lunch, and then headed to the Parks for some “me” time. I had changed clothes at the conference center, and when I did, I discovered that I had neglected to grab a pair of socks to wear with my sneaks. “No big deal” I thought to myself (never mind that I NEVER wear tennis shoes without socks. EVER.) I was so close to getting on that bus to the Magic Kingdom, and I wasn’t about to waste 1/2 hour of fun time going back to my room for socks..I was going to soldier on. Yeah, and seven hours later, I was wishing I had made another decision. My feet hurt and my shoes were sweaty. Ewww. Never again!

3rd DONT: never walk the parks in sneakers and NO socks.

Other than those 3, my visit was full of great DOs and lots of fun. What are some of your most memorable dont’s? I’d love for you to share them in the comments below. I promise I’ll be laughing WITH you about them 😉

  3. I bought cute little boots to wear with my pirate costume for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.
I wore them twice to work to break them in, but they were Aerosoles and those are “made for comfort”, right?? Wrong! About an hour and 3 blisters into the party, I transformed from “cute mommy pirate” in the perfect boots, to “frumpy mommy pirate” with big white tennis shoes! I didn’t even care, either!

DON’T dress for “cute” instead of comfort when at Disney…..even if it’s part of your costume!! Luckily I had the foresight to bring my tennis shoes in the backpack with us!

    Great meeting you there, Dee!

    1. Hahaha! That was a great story, Kari. I love “frumpy mommy pirate”…and I’ll bet you were still rockin it 😉 great to have met you too!
