Refreshing Review: Win From Within by John Gray III

{I received this book for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own…enjoy! :)}

I have heard Pastor John Gray preach for a few years now, thanks to watching him on TBN with my husband weekly. I know that he is a powerful minister with a quick wit and a “put-you-at-ease” personality as well. Matter of fact, he also has some versatile vocal pipes!

So, when I picked up this book to read, I was pretty much caught off guard by how it started off. Win From Within starts off deep, y’all, as Pastor Gray shares from a personal place of struggle. In fact, I wasn’t sure if I was going to read on from there. At first.

He begins with a transformational moment of having to come face to face with himself, and it was real. God had brought him to a place where he needed to find his TRUE significance in Christ, and not in his schedule, how well-known his name was, or where his travels were taking him. The intensity of his description of the impact of this moment was something that I wasn’t expecting straight out the gate, in the first part of the first chapter. I read it a little, and then put the book down for a few. Here is why I picked it up again:

Synopsis of Win From Within

From the publisher’s site:

In WIN FROM WITHIN, John Gray helps readers identify how best to handle the most difficult, challenging and yet necessary battle that we all face-our inner struggle to overcome the worst versions of ourselves. He offers biblical lessons to aid in combatting bad habits and limiting patterns so that the best version of ourselves emerges.
WIN FROM WITHIN gives practical application to the story recorded in Genesis of Jacob wrestling with the man at the River Jabbok, and through it readers will learn how to become the persons they were created to be. The persons God intended each of us to be develops as we face our inner battles.
With examples from his own life as well as his ministerial counseling, Gray provides a pathway to awakening. He includes strategies for confronting the past, how we have been labeled, who people have said we are, even who we think we are, so that we can win the battle and be who God intends us to be.
Jacob spent much of his life running and hiding from himself. At a certain point we, like Jacob, cannot run from our true selves anymore. We must stop and face ourselves if we are to become great. WIN FROM WITHIN helps us conquer our inner darkness and overcome such hindrances as fear, shame and guilt.
This powerfully biblical self-help guide will push us toward victory over our inner struggles. Winning will make us the persons we have always wanted to be, the persons we have dreamed about becoming, the persons God created us to be.

My Thoughts

I got my bearings and realized that Win From Within would be a journey of a read. It would be very different experience than the one I had just had recently, reading Pastor Joel Osteen’s newest book, Next Level Thinking.  This one would take me on my own personal journey of humbling myself before the Lord, even as Pastor Gray shared from his own life. With that in mind, I slowed my pace and kept reading.

I appreciate how Pastor Gray paralleled his own story with that of Jacob. I was able to receive even more from the account of Jacob’s life in Scripture, even though I have read about his life more time than I can recall.

If there is a favorite aspect of God’s character that I love the most, it is that He is RELATIONAL.  Religion is just not His thing. The lasting things that God wants to do for me are the things that He wants to do IN me, as I come to Him and let Him change me.

Win From Within is a book for anyone who wants to overcome. “This powerfully biblical self-help guide will equip you for victory over your inner struggles. You can win you inner battles and become the person you always wanted to be….indeed, the winner God created you to be.”

Here’s to true victory in Christ!
