Refreshing Review: No Limits by Dr. John Maxwell

Sometimes we get stuck in life. We don’t mean to, but we get comfortable where we are, or don’t believe that we can do and experience and give more. We just need to be encouraged and nudged to move forward. God is faithful to send someone to inspire and to speak to us and to give specific direction for that next step. Dr. John Maxwell does just that in his new book, No Limits!

About No Limits, from the publisher:

We often treat the word capacity as if it were a natural law of limitation. Unfortunately, most of us are much more comfortable defining what we perceive as off-limits rather than what’s really possible. Could it be that many of us have failed to expand our potential because we have allowed what we perceive as capacity to define us? What if our limits are not really our limits?

In his newest book, John Maxwell identifies 17 core capacities. Some of these are abilities we all already possess, such as energy, creativity and leadership. Others are aspects of our lives controlled by our choices, like our attitudes, character, and intentionality. Maxwell examines each of these capacities, and provides clear and actionable advice on how you can increase your potential in each. He will guide you on how to identify, grow, and apply your critical capacities. Once you’ve blown the “cap” off your capacities, you’ll find yourself more successful–and fulfilled–in your daily life.

My Thoughts

My husband got me hooked on Dr. Maxwell’s materials. I’ve read several of his books, and I am always motivated to keep moving forward. He has a way of making complex concepts simple and plain…and doable. I am the leader that I am now in part because of his influence.

No Limits takes you right where you are and propels you forward. The book is divided into 3 main sections:

  • awareness of the things that limit you and taking those caps off
  • develop the capacities you already possess
  • do the things that will maximize your capacity

Each chapter hones in on one specific capacity, such as your people capacity (your ability to build relationships), or your abundance capacity (your choice to believe there is more than enough). There are three questions at end of each chapter that cause you to pause and process the chapter you just read. This is a book to be read AND digested.

As always, Dr. Maxwell shares from his deep well of personal experiences. He allows his readers to peer into his encounters with those around him, and he shares how those encounters have shaped his thinking and views on life. But it’s more than that. Dr. Maxwell extracts simple yet profound principles from those encounters to share with us, his readers, so that we can go farther in our lives as well. This book is not just for leaders in title only, but to bring out the leader and the best in each one of us.

I am deeply grateful for Dr. Maxwell and his willingness to be used to help anyone reach their full potential. I encourage you to get this book, be mentored by him, and to go for reaching your full capacity. Let’s start to live the No Limits life God intends for us to live!
