“God created fatherhood to introduce us to who He is.” ~ Stephen Kendrick

 The term “father” can bring up a myriad of feelings and thoughts for many people. For some, it is a very positive term, filled with love and closeness and warm memories; for others, not so much. A father may have been tyrannical, harsh, cold, not present, or absent.

For me, it was something in between. I wasn’t particularly close to my dad, even as an only child. We had moments of warmth and laughter, and he introduced me to Christ, and I am forever grateful for that. (He also gave me my love of all things Star Trek – we watched the original series over and over when I was a child 😊 ) However, I couldn’t really talk to my dad about things, especially as an adult. I realize that, as I watched other women my age and others interact with their dads, something was missing from our relationship.

I think that because of that situation, I looked hard for that father role in God. I knew that the Bible referred to Him as “Father” and I began to lean hard into that for my life, for real relationship with God. So, fast forward to when I had the privilege of screening this film, Show Me The Father, recently, I had a feeling it would speak to me in a big way.

That would prove to be an understatement.

Show Me The Father synopsis:

Everyone has a unique father story. Whether positive or painful, it’s always personal and can deeply affect the core of our identity and direction of our lives. Kendrick Brothers’ Show Me The Father is the first documentary film from the creators of War Room, Overcomer, Fireproof, and Courageous Legacy. Featuring a variety of amazing true stories, this captivating movie takes audiences of all ages on an inspiring and emotional cinematic journey. Providing a fresh perspective on the roles of fathers in today’s society, Show Me The Father invites you to think differently about how you view your earthly father, and how you personally relate to God.

My Thoughts

 First, let me say that I have come to trust and look forward to any movie produced by Alex and Stephen Kendrick. Their track record and impact has become evident over the years. So, when I was invited to be on a Zoom call with the Kendrick brothers to hear more about Show Me The Father, I was pretty excited! It was quite a delightful experience. They were glad to be there with several of us bloggers, and I was grateful to be in the room. They were gracious and humble, authentic and funny.

Having said that, we were able to hear more of the “why” behind the making of this movie, as well as their desire for God to use this film to really impact lives. Show Me The Father, as you might expect, came forth by way of a lot of prayer about content and direction.

This movie is a journey through five true-life stories (narrowed down from 17), each of which is truly powerful. Along the way, we hear from men and women of different ethnicities and backgrounds, and the documentary style is laid back and easy to follow as the details of their lives unfold onscreen. I was drawn into the openness and vulnerability of those who courageously shared in this movie. Show Me The Father explores elements of adoption, mentorship, redemption and legacy, and so much more. We get to learn more about the Kendrick’s patriarch, Larry Kendrick, and his journey as a man and as their father. There is even a surprise in one of the stories that brought me to (happy) tears! And woven throughout the telling of all these personal stories are wonderful nuggets of the fatherhood of God as shared by Dr. Tony Evans, pastor and mentor to many. {And may I say that the musical score is magnificent, many kudos to Kyle McCuiston!}

I won’t say much more about the content of the film because I really want you to have the pleasure of experiencing the stories unfold as I did when I watched it. But I will close by saying this: Show Me the Father gives us imperfect people being touched by a perfect and loving God, the best and perfect Father. I was touched, inspired, and very encouraged. No matter what your experience has been with your earthly father, there is so much HOPE in God. He will be all the father that we will ever need. Alex Kendrick said it this way: “God wants to be close to us.”
