Helpful tidbits to enhance your Facebook experience

Facebook is a great tool for connecting with people, both personally and for your business. Most of us who use this social media platform have a good general knowledge on how to use it and how to navigate around. However, there are a couple of finer points that I have discovered for myself which have enabled me to enhance and streamline my FB usage, and I’d love to share them with you!

Getting notifications. How many times have you followed a person or a business (with the intent of keeping up with what they post), only to find that what they have posted gets lost in the shuffle of your timeline? I don’t like missing posts from certain businesses or blogs, so I have discovered that you can mark their page to receive a notice each time they post:

Getnotifications

Once you “like” a page, click the arrow beside the thumbs up icon, and see the drop-down menu. click “get notifications” and a black check mark should appear. {Note: this can be done on a tablet device, using Safari or Chrome, but it is a little easier from a desktop or laptop.}

FBpostblog

Now, when you click on your FB notification “globe”, you can see the most recent post/info from that page you liked. I got 1/2 off a manicure the other day from a local spa because I saw their post about the sale…score!

Creating an interest list. Do you have a lot of people that you follow? If so, your timeline can get a bit full, and its a lot to scroll through. So, in addition to or as an alternative to getting notifications, you can set up an interest list.

CreateFBlists

Scroll down the left hand side of your home FB page until you see “Interests”. Click that, and you should see something similar to the top photo above. Then click the “add interests” button and the bottom photo should appear. Pick a fun name for you list, such as “natural hair products” or “Disney info” and then you can build that list by typing in the names of the people/businesses you want to add. Once you have made a list, it will appear on the left hand side of your page, and you can see posts only from those people in that list. It saves you time and effort!

Turning on/off notifications. Have you ever commented on a post, only to find that you get a notification EVERY time someone else posts a comment too? I have and all those notifications can have your head spinning. On the flip side, sometimes the post is for ideas or suggestions for something interesting to you, and you DO want to see what others are saying. There is an option for both of those!

Simply click on the upper right-hand corner of the post and you will get a drop-down menu, like above. You can then select “turn on notifications” to follow the replies. If the notifications are already on (you posted a comment), then the option to “turn off notifications” will appear. Voila! problem solved 🙂

I hope that you have found these tips to be helpful. Are there other things you have questions about concerning FB or Twitter? If so, please ask your question below, and I will attempt to help. If I don’t know the answer, I will at least get you pointed in the right direction!

Here’s to working smarter,

  1. Now that my initial panic has subsided that you were showing people how to unfollow Wonder and Company (Dee! You are our most valuable fan!) I am loving this post. (FB showed your “unfollow” photo as the featured image, whew)

    I thought I built an Interest list a while back but it looks like I haven’t. I was wondering if people can see your list and/or what you title it so before I asked you, I looked it up. Some good info from Facebook here for people like me that are into strategic privacy. (and then FB laughs and laughs): https://www.facebook.com/help/440058336033758/

    Thanks, Dee!

    1. Thank you Megan for making me aware of this…so sorry for the panic! And I LOVE being your most valuable fan. I can’t get enough of Wonder and Company! I will delete the post from today on FB, and repost to make sure the image is different. And thank you for the link…I will check it out today. I will say that I have a couple of lists that are private that I think only I can see. Will read up on that too!
