Pregnancy propelled me into my fitness journey.
Yep, it’s true. I had never really had to watch my weight, exercise for a goal, or anything like that, through high school, college, and my mid-twenties. Shoot, I really didn’t like to even think about breaking a sweat! Then, I had our first child, a son, at age 27, and our 3rd and last child at age 31, and in those years in between, some body dynamics shifted, and 2 things happened:
1. I needed to move on a consistent basis to drop the pounds that I had gained with my pregnancies (I gained more than 60 pounds with the last one), and
2. I suffered trauma to my body known as a diastasis recti with my first pregnancy that got worse with the last 2.
In order to remedy number 1, I started walking. After our last daughter was born, I started to pick up the pace and, for the first time in my life, at age 33, I started running! I have kept it up on and off for over 10 years, and I enjoy how I feel when I run. It is my hope one day run one of the runDisney races that are offered.
For number 2, I have scoured the internet for at least 15 year to find out more about this condition. Diastasis recti is a separation of the abdominal muscles (and injury to the connective tissue that holds them together, known as fascia). It can be responsible for abdominal weakness, back pain, pelvic floor issues, and the like, and in some severe cases, people opt for surgery to repair it. For me, surgery was not financially an option, nor did I want to elect to have it (very personal reasons). So I searched to for exercises to repair this condition.
This past year has been a golden one for me, the year I have been praying and believing God for. For the first time in almost two decades, I have experienced relief and improvement by doing a proper regimen for DR. This has been monumental for me! I feel like my body is coming back together.
Let me just say that this has not been about looking as though I had never borne 3 children from this body. No, this was about finding a way to be strong and healthy, and to properly revoer and bounce back from the injury that I had experienced. Wendy Powell of Mutu System and Beth Learn of Fit2b have helped me to get my body back the right way. While I still have bulges that I’m working on, I know that my core is healing and I’m in way better physical shape today than I was at this time last year!
Here’s to staying in the game,
