What makes gray hair gray? I don’t really think I took time to ponder this and other questions about hair until my own brunette crown began to transform into silver strands!
As I enjoy my new “going for the gray” journey, I decided that I needed to learn more about this hair transition that many of us go through. For one, I am curious as to what exactly is taking place, and two, I want to know how to best care for my gray.
Just the fact ma’am…
Here are some fun facts that I have learned thus far:
What IS gray hair? It is simply hair that lacks pigment, and having it can be a genetic predisposition. Moreover, it can also be caused by stress or improper diet.
Gray hair can be dry and wiry. this is due to oil glands producing less oil on the scalp. PhilipKingsley.com has this to say about it: “Contrary to popular belief, grey hair is not coarser– it is usually finer, as everyone’s hair gets finer with age. The reason why grey hair seems coarser is because oil glands produce less sebum when you’re older, which results in drier and more roughly textured hair. This can also be due to the fact that most people chemically process and colour their hair more as they get older.”
It can get yellow over time. Everydayhealth.com says this: “… the outer covering, or cuticle, of gray hair is very porous. This means gray hair can attract pollution which may turn hair yellow or orange. To keep hair perfectly silver-gray, use purple or violet-colored products to take out the yellow…”
How do I work with my gray?
Here are a few style suggestions as I plan to use:
- Get a contemporary cut to showcase the silver
- Use styling methods that don’t pull and tug on the hair, especially if you have a curly texture
- Shampoo and condition with products that provide intense moisturization, such as those that contain shea butter and/or olive oil
- Again, use purple or violet-colored products to remove the yellowing that may occur
Stay tuned…I am going to be reviewing a lovely line of natural hair care products real soon. Come back to find out more about NaturALL Club hair products!
